Dental prophylaxis (prophy) is more than the daily cleaning done at home and significant in both the prevention of dental disease and the maintenance of good oral hygiene, healthy teeth and gums. Professional dental prophylaxis maintenance by our gentle registered dental hygienists includes:
Removal of plaque and tartar from all visible tooth surfaces and supragingival (above the gumline) scaling
Debridement (or removal of dead cells), plaque and tartar beneath the gums
Oral hygiene evaluation
Review for home care and recommendations
Tooth brushing and flossing instructions
Charting of gum attachments (periodontal charting of bone surrounding each tooth) and scheduling of future periodontal care as required
Fluoride treatment (gels, varnishes)
It is generally recommended for a prophy appointment with the dental hygienist once every six months, but your doctor may recommend a more frequent interval, depending upon the condition of your teeth and gums.
Scaling and root planing removes plaque and tartar deposits on the tooth and root surfaces in order for gum tissue to heal and periodontal pockets to shrink.
Initial and continuing periodontal care
Referral and coordination of care with periodontal specialty practices, as needed
