Managing Implant Mechanical Complications Lecture by Charles Mastrovich D.D.S.
Date: Saturday, August 12, 2023
Time: 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Location: UTHealth San Antonio School of Dentistry, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229
Course Description:
For years, we have all experienced the invaluable enhancement implant dentistry routinely brings to a restorative outcome. Adding implant support can often provide a more conservative treatment approach, as in avoidance of additional preparations for a fixed partial denture or adding support and/or retention to augment stability in a case. It’s challenging to imagine practicing dentistry without modern implant technology. However, in some cases, various mechanical failures can present, complicating the prognosis of the case or forcing revisions which are expensive to both the patient and practice. This course will examine many of the issues surrounding these failures. Why did it happen? Could it have been anticipated and or prevented? Is it possible to effectively resolve the immediate problem while re-engineering the case for increased stability? And lastly, understanding your limitations as to when to safely proceed or to refer. If proceeding, what tools and training do you need to prevent further complication of the case? All of these issues will be systematically examined and then reinforced utilizing multiple Implant Mechanical Rescue (IMR) cases selected from actual case histories.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Better identify some of the issues which pre-dispose a case for mechanical problems.
- Recognize options in case construction which greatly influence force distribution, mechanical
integrity, and long-term robustness. - Understand how screws function and how to deal with screw failure when it presents.
- Decide what to do when an implant mechanical complication presents, but even more
importantly, what not to do, to prevent additional complications.
Featured Speaker
Dr. Charles Mastrovich received his D.D.S. degree from Northwestern University Dental School in 1976. Following graduation, he completed a General Practice Residency Program at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration Hospital in Sepulveda, California. He has maintained a restorative practice in Escondido, California since 1978. Over the ensuing years, his ongoing efforts have continually expanded his knowledge base and clinical expertise. His post graduate studies have included numerous courses in most disciplines of restorative dentistry. In addition, he has been an active participant in several in depth study groups encompassing craniomandibular biomechanics, implant therapies, and precision cast gold restorative. Since 2008, in addition to his restorative practice, he has combined his knowledge of implant systems and mechanics into a specialized expertise involving the recovery of failed implant components. For these reasons, he has received numerous invitations to lecture for study clubs and national professional organizations. His presentations have focused on problem resolution utilizing the multiple disciplines of restorative, biomechanics, and mechanical dysfunction in dental therapies.
